Description

An INCREDIBLE and completely unique antique George III 15K gold, silver and 46 gemstones totaling 6.0 carats of Colombian emerald, rhodolite garnet, diamond and pearl royal Gold State Coach form brooch or pin dating to circa 1762, presented in an antique box.
This amazing one of a kind brooch would have been the absolute show stopper for a wealthy member of the British aristocracy who wanted to celebrate the first outing of George III’s Gold State Coach on 25 November, 1762 in style!
The Gold State Coach was commissioned in 1760 for George III’s coronation and wedding to Princess Charlotte in 1761 but it turned out to be such a complex project it was used for the first time for the State Opening of Parliament on 25 November, 1762. At the time it was the most expensive English coach ever built and such was the public interest its first outing was the most anticipated London society event of the year. The newspapers of the day kept a good record of the event and noted that ‘the crowds were so great’ stretching from St. James’s to Parliament House that it was almost impossible to walk the streets and such was the excited crush ‘women lost their hats, capuchins, gowns, shoes, etc. in the crowd’. Anyone with rooms in and around Parliament Street were able to rent them out at exorbitant rates for the day so the wealthy ladies and gentlemen could lean out of the windows and watch the King pass in the coach, ‘drawn by eight fine cream coloured horses’. The Gold State Coach is still in use today for coronations of British monarchs.
It’s very rare to find jewelry created for specific occasions from this period and this breathtaking closed back royal coach form brooch with moving wheels has an incredible 46 gemstones totaling 6.0 carats, the brooch created in silver topped solid 15K yellow gold with a beautiful foiled back 1 carat natural Colombian emerald of stunning light green color flanked by two 1/2 carat foil backed natural Colombian emeralds representing the coach windows, the body of the coach with 38 reversed pave set (the stones are set upside down with the culets pointing up-a style fashionable in the mid 18th century) glowing pink natural rhodalite garnets totaling 3.9 carats, the moving wheels set with two sparkling natural old rose cut diamonds at their center totaling 0.1 carats and completed with three glowing white natural pearls representing the royal crown on the roof. The domed gold reverse has a pin and C clasp. The brooch is presented in an antique blue velvet and silk leather box. The brooch is unmarked and tests for 15K gold. A superb and rare opportunity to own an unique piece of 18th century British Georgian royal history!
The brooch measures approximately 32mm x 35mm. The central emerald measures about 8.8mm x 4.5mm, the outer emeralds about 5.7mm x 3.8mm, all three have a total weight of approximately 2 carats. The rhodolite garnets each measure about +/-2.5mm with a total weight of about 3.9 carats. The diamonds measure about 2mm with a total weight of about 0.1 carats. The large pearl measures about 5.5mm across its widest point, the smaller pearls about 4mm across their widest points. The brooch has a total weight of approximately 15.7 grams.
The brooch is in very good condition with all over light age related general wear. All the stones are present and look fantastic. The hinge works well and the pin closes securely. The box has some wear mostly to the corners, the inside is in good condition and the latch works well.

TERMS OF SALE & RETURNS
We make great efforts to honestly and accurately describe each item we list. We back this up with many photographs, all with a close-up zoom option for detailed inspection. Due to the majority of our items being antique/vintage and often unique it can be difficult to determine age and as such all our items are sold ‘as is’. However, if we are not certain about the age of an item we will either not mention an age or say the item is being sold as a later or modern piece and then leave it up to more experienced buyers to determine the exact age. Items are not returnable if it was not of the age/value you were hoping it to be with no exceptions. If we place a date on an item we guarantee it to be of that period or earlier. If you require further pictures or more information about an item, please let us know prior to bidding or purchase. Items cannot be returned for any condition issues either shown in the pictures or mentioned in the listing. As many items we sell are one hundred years or older we will not accept returns for wear consistent with the item’s age. Any item mentioned as sold ‘as is’ in the listing will not be eligible for any form of return or refund. If it is determined an item is eligible for a return, the item must be shipped back within 48 hours, insured and tracked. A restocking fee may apply. We are very easy to work with and welcome any and many questions during our listings, so please let us know if you have one! Thanks again for looking!
